Created by Brighten the Corners, 'I used to be a design student' is a new publication that looks at the fundamental change from studying design at university to establishing a career in the arts. The launch of the book opens at Camberwell College of Arts next Monday 18^th February as the books content was inspired by a workshop Brighten the Corners led with Camberwell graphic design students.

Frank Philippin and Billy Kiosoglou met whilst studying graphic design and have worked together on Brighten the Corners since graduating from the Royal College of Art in London in 1999. Following the launch of the book Frank and Billy are to lead two workshops for the current Camberwell BA Graphic Design course at Camberwell College of Arts to complete the full circle, returning to the source of inspiration for the project.

971 Horses and 4 Zebras is an exhibition at Wimbledon Space of artists' films that focus on labour intensive animation techniques as part of contemporary practice. The exhibition showcases a wide variety of approach and style with 15 animation artists involved. A coinciding screening and panel discussion at Tate Modern Starr auditorium will take place on Thursday 29 November.

Camberwell Press published a fold out booklet designed by Work-Form for the exhibition that runs from 2 November to 9 December at Wimbledon Space.

Alt/Shift is a one day conference driven by university lecturers and design directors in creative industries who are challenged to examine the future of design education. Camberwell Press director Darryl Clifton is one of the speakers for the event. Discussions at Alt-Shift derive from topics that have come to the attention of design graduates, practioners and tutors; such as instigating the business like methods that have potential to coexist within a creative degree. As well as discussing the importance of communicating and building relationships in design industries with the emphasis on collaboration.

Accompaning the exhibition ' Triumph of the Will' at Camberwell Space, Paul O'Kane compiled text on the subject The Beauty of Failure which Camberwell Press published a small booklet designed by work-form.

Olympia, Leni Riefenstahl’s film of the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, is a masterpiece of cinematography that erotises the body beautiful and aestheticises perfection in a visual language still employed by the advertising industry today. It uses spectacle as a triumph of the ideal over labour. Yet the Olympics, by definition, were as much about failure as they were about success, where display conceals obsession, and where the repetition and pain required is sublimated into mesmeric entertainment. It is through the sheer Sisyphean pointlessness of this drama that such fallibilities become the subject of this exhibition. With comedy, pathos, and absurdity, something of the human is reinstated within the spectacle by these art works. In this respect, titling the exhibition after Riefenstahl’s more notorious film is not completely ironic, but rather, opens up a point of departure for small acts of resistance.

Existing in the top floor of Southbank Centre is The Poetry Library, a hermitage for poetry enthusiasts. Holding the most comprehensive and accesible collection of poetry from 1912, with an exhibition space featuring artists work that engage with the collection in the library.

Camberwell's BA Illustration tutor, Mary Kuper, exhibits at The Poetry Library with her enchanting figurative illustrations toying with the unconcious and concious state between words poets use. Mary chose to follow the words poetry, dame, pedigree, barnacle and allusion back to their origins depicting their role in the stories they are told in. 

Established in 2004, Wimbledon Space works as an exhibition space deriving through research and practise within Wimbledon College Of Art with an emphasis on the specialisms taught at the college, namely Fine Art and Theatre Design. Commissioned to redesign the logo were our Camberwell Press designers who took simplicity and legibility into the key functions for the type. Set in a bold Avenir type face in all caps to perform as a modern, humanistic and legible form with a striking look. The logo has been precisely spaced to allow optimum legibility at multiple sizes functioning in black and white as well as colour.

Mokita's second illustration forum will explore 'The Sentimental Gene' in illustration, covering themes of presence, function, validity, and the role of 'sentimentality' as a medium in illustration. Mokita is founded by Camberwell Press director Darryl Clifton, sparking discussion and educating our illustration theories with leading practitioner speakers.

It was a day of inside jobs as we saw two inner Press projects carried out in full steam. The Oxford School Trip was organised by Press team members Jake Hopwood, Alex Hough, Freddy Williams and BA Graphic Design third year Charlie Abbott. The Visualising Literature drawing workshop by Press members/Illustrators Billie Muraben and Rosie Eveleigh. As well as these lively activities, Hato Press installed their mobile library in the gallery space and indulged us with a live twitter chat.

Seeking to create the concept of the ideal studio within a public space, Camberwell Press is taking over Camberwell Space gallery for two and a half weeks. The exhibition will culminate in a publication launch from material generated via a series of talks, workshops, design & publishing projects.  Curated by James Edgar.
