New Photographic Practices: SCOPE was designed by Alex Hough and Jake Hopwood for an exhibition held at the Visual Art Centre Gallery, Tsinghua University, Beijing featuring the work of photographers and filmmakers who all work at UAL, including Chelsea’s BA Photography Course Director, Martin Newth.
Transportability was an important consideration, as was the problem of conflict between images and text in a word heavy document. The visual content was on different paper stock to that of the essay and biographies: a bright white, coated stock for full colour images, and uncoated, coloured and textured stock for the text.

Simplicity in the design and presentation of the content was paramount, but also key was the importance of reflecting the exhibition’s focus on new approaches to existing photographic methods.
Alex and Jake chose to communicate the conversation between contemporary and traditional processes through their choice of typeface News Gothic, a sans serif type designed by Morris Fuller Benton in 1908. The cover was designed to clearly separate Scope the name of the exhibition and New Photographic Practices, the name of the collective. It was printed digitally in an edition of 500.
